Shou Sugi Ban texture

焼杉板 — Shou Sugi Ban

An ancient fire. A modern object.

For over three centuries, Japanese craftsmen have used controlled flame to seal and strengthen timber. We carry that practice forward, by hand, in oak.

  1. 01

    Selecting the oak

Only solid European oak, slow-grown, dense and certified. We never use veneers, plywood or composites.

  2. 02

    Shaping by hand

Each blank is cut and dimensioned by our craftsmen, preserving the live edge and natural character of the wood.

  3. 03

    The fire

Controlled flame is passed across the surface until the cellulose carbonises. Heat, time and angle are the craftsman's only tools.

  4. 04

    Brushing & cleansing

Once cooled, the char is brushed back to reveal the deep, graphic texture beneath. Loose carbon is washed away.

  5. 05

    Natural oil finish

A light coat of natural oil seals the surface, deepens the contrast and protects the piece for decades of use.

  6. 06

    Inspection & dispatch

Every object is inspected, signed and shipped directly from our workshop in Lithuania to your home.
